Collars, steel and formwork, in the hours before any of it becomes concrete.
This is the best documented stage we have in Oran Park and the one that produces the findings people remember. Termite collars not fitted at slab penetrations, which leaves a concealed route from soil to structure sealed permanently in place. Re-entrant corner reinforcement not installed, which is the steel that controls shrinkage cracking at internal corners. Cover short of the minimum. Beam widths inconsistent. Vapour barrier joints unsealed. None of it is visible an hour after the truck leaves.

Extra steel placed diagonally at internal corners of the slab, where the geometry concentrates shrinkage stress. Without it, that corner is the place a crack starts, and it is a controlled crack rather than a structural failure but it is avoidable.
Because after the pour the penetration is sealed around whatever is or is not there. A collar fitted afterwards is not the same thing, and retrofitting is a far more involved job.
You can look at the surface. You cannot look at cover, at collars or at the steel inside it. Which is exactly why this stage exists.

An hour to ninety minutes on a standard lot, with the report generally out the same evening so the builder can act.
We record it where visible. We have found the box and conduit not installed at pre-pour stage here, which is far easier to correct before the slab than after.
